La Clinica De La Raza Opens New Facility in the City of Concord

 

La Clinica de la Raza’s new health care facility in Concord has opened its doors. This new 17,000 square-foot clinic will provide quality health care for low-income and uninsured children and adults throughout Contra Costa County. La Clinica Monument replaces a 5,000 square-foot facility in Pleasant Hill and is expected to serve more than 15,000 patients annually.

Bay Area health centers get $19 million in grants

Bay Area health centers will receive almost $19 million to expand service to thousands of uninsured, immigrant and other needy patients, the Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday.

One of the recipients is Lifelong Medical Care in Berkeley. The $5 million grant will mean the creation of a new clinic that will target mainly low-income communities in Alameda County and western Contra Costa County to treat people with HIV or mental or physical disabilities, the homeless, and Medi-Cal recipients.

More Healthcare Choices for Solano County’s Children

There is a clear need for greater access to pediatric services, and this need is expected to grow as the number of children and families with new coverage increases through health-care reform. Fortunately, the community health care delivery system is coordinating and expanding pediatric services to better serve low-income children in Solano County.

The local community health center, Community Medical Centers, recently completed an expansion of its Vacaville site in order to increase delivery of pediatric care, and quality pediatric services continue to be available at their Dixon site as well as at La Clínica de La Raza sites in Vallejo.

Komen Foundation bows to social media firestorm, reverses Planned Parenthood funding cut

The breast cancer advocacy organization that used the Internet to mobilize fundraising walks nationwide backed off Friday from its decision to eliminate grants for Planned Parenthood after many of its supporters ignited an online firestorm of protest.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation caved to the pressure. It announced that it would allow Planned Parenthood to continue applying for breast cancer screening grants.

Fury Over Komen Decision to Withhold Cancer Funds

Lisa Augustine raised more than $3,000 and walked 60 miles for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure fundraiser shortly after undergoing surgery and radiation for breast cancer in 2010.

But the 39-year-old Napa woman will no longer contribute after the decision by the nation's leading breast cancer charity to withdraw support from Planned Parenthood for breast exams for low-income women.

Kaiser Gives Tri-City Health Clinic Grant for HIV Testing

Oakland — A Tri-City non-profit that provides mobile HIV testing in nightclubs and motels has received a $75,000 grant from Kaiser Permanente to expand its outreach to African-American Latino youth, a population group disproportionately affected by the AIDS epidemic.

Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific is using its grant to increase HIV testing in Antioch, Richmond, El Cerrito, Hilltop, Pittsburg, Vallejo, and Walnut Creek with a special emphasis on at-risk populations including 15- to 24-year-old African-Americans and Latinos.

Jane Garcia inspires trust with ‘clinic of the people’

In her 28 years as CEO, Garcia has grown La Clinica from a $3 million organization with three sites in Oakland to an $82 million outfit with 26 clinics in three East Bay counties: Alameda, Contra Costa and Solano. More than 68,000 East Bay patients rely on La Clinica de la Raza for primary and specialist care, totaling more than 328,000 annual visits.

La Clinica de la Raza, Spanish for “the clinic of the people,” provides preventive, primary and some specialist care in a culturally sensitive way. Services run the gamut from basic medical, dental and optical care to more specialized areas like mental health and behavioral health services.

Parcel tax passes for Doctors Medical Center

West Contra Costa residents delivered a clear message Tuesday: They want Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo to remain, and they're willing to pay for it.

Voters overwhelmingly approved Measure J, a $47 a year parcel tax that will raise $5.1 million annually for the financially struggling hospital.

La Clinica de la Raza Named the Social Welfare Alumni Association's Field Agency of the Year

In 2011, the School of Social Welfare’s longtime community partner La Clinica de la Raza marks its 40th anniversary. Fittingly, the Social Welfare Alumni Association is helping to celebrate the clinic’s milestone with the inaugural Field Agency of the Year Award, which was bestowed to La Clinica at SWAA’s Annual Awards Dinner on April 22nd.
